Following Mark van Bommel's appointment as the head of Belgium's national team in July 2026, replacing Rudi Garcia, there was a discussion about potentially extending his contract for a week. However, after the 2026 World Cup ended with an elimination at the quarter-final stage, Vincent Mannaert, the technical director, has stated that they will not rush into making this decision.

No Extension Clause in Van Bommel's Contract

Vincent Mannaert told RTBF: 'Rudi Garcia had some constraints regarding extension. We took a week from both sides and after analyzing our side, Rudi did his with his staff, we decided not to extend the contract and move towards another profile.

It’s a two-year collaboration; we shouldn’t rush things. We must do the same with Mark as we did with Rudi. […] Maybe we will extend, maybe not, but we haven't planned an extension clause in this contract.'

The former Antwerp coach is expected to perform at least as well as the perspiring coach, if not better.
