Kevin De Bruyne is continuing his international career with Belgium. The 35-year-old midfielder has confirmed his presence in Mark van Bommel's squad and took part in the new head coach's first training session on Monday.
The Napoli player explained his decision to Belgian broadcaster RTBF. "I wanted to come here and be with the group," said De Bruyne. He feels physically and mentally well and believes attending this gathering was the right choice. De Bruyne noted that many younger players had asked him to stay, and he now wants to help them and gradually pass on responsibility.
Van Bommel's First Steps
Mark van Bommel conducted his first session in charge of Belgium this week. The midfielder admits he knew little about the former Dutch international before his appointment. "I knew very little about Mark van Bommel before his arrival, admits the midfielder." The initial meetings and training went well, with the coach looking to implement basic principles. The team, eliminated in the quarter-finals of the 2026 World Cup by Spain (2-1), has a recent form of three wins, one draw and one defeat from its last five matches.
With 124 caps and 38 goals, De Bruyne remains a key figure. He is pleased with his current level at Napoli, where he has shown his effectiveness even when coming off the bench.
